A Fiddler's Tale

This is a rehearsal performance of text written by Stanley Crouch  of 'A Fiddler's Tale' by Wynton Marsalis.

Filmed on stage in an empty concert hall at London's South Bank Centre ahead of the evening performance.

A Fiddler's Tale is a 1998 musical composition with spoken narration composed by the legendary jazz trumpeter Wynton Marsalis, featuring a libretto written by respected cultural critic and novelist Stanley Crouch.

The piece is a modern, jazz infused reimagining f Igor Stravinsky's famous 1918 theatrical work, L'Histoire du Soldat ( A Soldier's Story )

A fiddler's Tale is a contemporary Faustian parable about a star violinist ( Beatrice Connors )  juggling integrity, greed and corruption.

The story is rooted inthe black south and transitioned into the glossy , high-pressure corportae world . Marsalis updates the story within the modern content of high powered record execs and recording deals. 

This rehearsal is for the narrator and so no music or musicians is presence. it is story only.

A Fiddler's Tale  is a rarely performed chamber piece. For the music , Marsalis utilises the same seven piece instrument structure as Stravinsky, namely violin, double bass, clarinet, bassoon, cornet, trombone and percussion.
